  • Send a letter to political prisoners. Story of Yan Salanovich

    January 11, 2021

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “The BSUIR student Yan Salanovich was detained on November 1 during a march to Kurapaty. He was sentenced to 12 days of arrest, but he has never been released. This can be described in one word – revenge.

In the summer, Yan Salanovich did an internship at the KGB and worked there as an engineer. Despite this, he actively participated in marches. After the detention, he was taken to the KGB, where he listed all the actions in which he took part and wrote a letter of resignation. Since then, endless trials and sentences have begun.

On December 24, he received his eighth sentence. In total, Yan will spend 114 days behind bars. And there is no guarantee that he, like all of us, will not be deceived again.

His mother Olga Salanovich shares the details of her son's detention. She was given a note from Yan — he said they drew up nine protocols for him: “It's terrifying – when you don't know where to go, every morning you wake up and monitor the lists: has he been transported or not? I saw police vehicles with people leaving Akrestsina Detention Centre: this caused goosebumps and tears in my eyes. You stand with bags full of food and clothes, and you don't know whether he left or stayed. You find him in the lists and exhale: it means that today your son will receive your care package.”

Yan Salanovich is a brave man who took to the streets to defend fair elections. Now each of you can support Yan and send a letter or a postcard to him and other prisoners of conscience. Include a blank sheet and an envelope for Yan to answer.

Remember about two resources that will help you with this: http://politzek.me, a site with a list of political prisoners and all the data necessary for writing. And http://vkletochku.org will help you send a letter anonymously and even from another country”.
