Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya had a call with the President of the PA of the Council of Europe Rik Daems. Ms.Tsikhanouskaya thanked the President of PACE for the resolutions adopted in April on human rights violations and on urgent electoral reform in Belarus. The Belarusian leader also spoke about the repression of people in the country, the deteriorating human rights situation, the torture of political prisoners, Raman Pratasevich and Stsiapan Latypau.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya called on PACE:
– to create additional opportunities for democratic participation in the work of PACE;
– to keep the topic of Belarus on the agenda of the international community and, as a result, to increase pressure on the regime and to express publicly its position on the Belarusian crisis;
– to encourage the opening of a dialogue between the democratic forces and the regime in order to overcome the crisis.
“I am confident that Belarus will benefit from genuine cooperation with the Council of Europe in priority areas: human rights, democracy, strengthening the rule of law and combating corruption through the reform of democratic institutions, as well as the adoption of elaborate legislation and protection of media freedom», stated Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
