  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya saw 1920s correspondence between the Belarusian Democratic Republic and the Estonian government. It mostly concerned visas and residence permits

    October 26, 2022

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya visited the National Archives of Estonia. Prior to the visit, the National Archives had found unique materials from the Belarusian Democratic Republic (BNR) concerning its relations with Estonia.

Ms. Tsikhanouskaya was shown the original letter of recognition of Estonia's independence by the BNR Rada. Belarus, which was one of the first countries to recognize Estonia, had an embassy in the center of Tallinn.

A number of documents show the correspondence between the Belarusian mission in Tallinn and the Estonian government. Like now, 100 years ago the main topics of correspondence were visas, migration and residence permits for Belarusians in Estonia.

A working group of scientists may be established to study the found documents and present them to the public.

“The found documents demonstrate the 100-year history of our friendly relations. It is important that relations between our peoples remain friendly, as they have been in the past,” Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya noted.

The Head of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus also welcomed the decision of Estonia to abstain from appointing an ambassador to Minsk and send a diplomatic representative to Vilnius to build ties with democratic Belarus instead.
