    On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with US Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya.

    The Belarusian leader stressed the importance of keeping Belarus at the center of the international community's attention, including in organizations like the UN. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya spoke about the dire situation in Belarusian prisons and escalating repressions. She also mentioned the recent sentences to human rights activist Marfa Rabkova and journalist Dzianis Ivashyn. The Under Secretary of State was well aware of the situation with political prisoners and expressed support for them and their families. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya emphasized that all must be released unconditionally, without bargaining and the regime's lies about amnesty. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya stressed the importance of maintaining support for civil society and the repressed.

    Ms. Zeya and Ms. Tsikhanouskaya discussed further steps to hold Lukashenka accountable for committing crimes against Belarusians and dragging Belarus into the war against Ukraine. The national leader of Belarus highlighted that protecting and restoring the independence of Belarus is a priority of the United Transitional Cabinet. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya reinforced the need to put pressure on the regime and strengthen sanctions against its aides who pass repressive laws, like the recent one which provides for depriving the regime's opponents of Belarusian citizenship.
