  • Results of the work of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office for the January 3-16

    January 16, 2022

    – Following Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's request, Google removed the ads with interrogations of political prisoners by the KGB in Belarus. Google Vice President Karan Bhatia offered to organize a meeting between Tsikhanouskaya's Office and the Google team to discuss how to prevent similar situations in the future.

    – Volunteers of the Office started distributing leaflets and stickers calling to join the democratic forces’ common strategy for the so-called “referendum”. The strategy urges everyone to go to the polling stations and cross out both ballot choices, invalidating the whole procedure. To stay safe, volunteers follow security guidelines: cover their faces and wear undistinguishable clothes to avoid video surveillance and use disposable gloves to avoid fingerprints.

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office held a call with the representatives of local communities. They discussed the common strategy for the “referendum” and the ways to expand its outreach. Both Belarusians within the country and abroad can raise awareness regarding the strategy, via distributing leaflets and stickers or communicating it to friends and family offline and in various ways online.

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Special Representative on Elections, Alexander Shlyk, presented the Concept for the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus. It proposes to safeguard the Electoral Code against certain amendments, establish autonomy for electoral bodies and commissions from electoral contestants, ensure a fair contest in elections and opportunities for free competition. You can share your view on the concept via email: [email protected].

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya had a working meeting with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda. They discussed the transit of Belarusian products through the Baltic countries and support for relocated Belarusians, independent media, NGOs, and businesses that continued their activities after moving to Lithuania. Following the meeting, Lithuania announced the termination of the agreement between the Lithuanian Railways and Belaruskali from February 1.

    – Ms. Tsikhanouskaya and the leaders of the democratic forces released a joint statement on the unacceptability of the deployment of Belarusian troops for operations abroad: “The task of the Belarusian troops is to protect the sovereignty and security of Belarus, not resolve political conflicts. We do not accept the adoption of such decisions on behalf of the person deprived of legitimacy by the results of the 2020 elections, who by force seized and holds power in Belarus”.

    – Head of the Cabinet, Valery Kavaleuski, told Zerkalo.io about the EU Comprehensive Plan of Economic Support to democratic Belarus and answered questions regarding the requirements for the disbursement of 3 billion euros, directions for the use of these funds, and possible liabilities of Belarus.

    – In a live interview to Malanka LIVE, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Representative for the Constitutional Reform and Parliamentary Cooperation, Anatoli Liabedzka, answered the most pressing questions about the draft People's Constitution.

    – “We will not even consider the regime’s proposal to trade political prisoners”, claimed France's ex-Ambassador to Belarus Nicolas de Lacoste to Anatoli Liabedzka.

The Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya urges Belarusians to demonstrate their discontent over the regime’s actions by joining the democratic forces’ common strategy for the “referendum”. On the voting day, come to the polling stations, invalidate the ballot by crossing out both proposed options. Raise awareness and share honest information: this is not the only, but an extremely important step towards change.
