  • Results of the Belarusian Anti-War Movement for May 9

    Any Belarusian can join the Movement and choose from numerous options to resist the war and Belarus' regime.  

    Here is an overview of the Movement on May 9. 

    Support for Ukrainians and Belarusians   

    • An anti-war concert was held in Warsaw under the patronage of the National Anti-Crisis Management. The Warsaw Freedom Orchestra and the Lity Taler band performed Belarusian, Ukrainian, and Polish music. Belarusian actors from Teatr Powszechny and Nowy Teatr read out passages from works by Sviatlana Aleksiyevich. 
    • The BYSOL Foundation purchased 22 fully-equipped casualty care backpacks worth 35,000 euros. Belarusians had raised funds for purchase.
    • Belarusian artists drew pictures in support of Ukraine.
    • Belarusians in Australia hoisted the Ukrainian and Belarusian national flags into the sky. 
    • Volha Budai, an interpreter from Belarus, organized a fundraiser to purchase aid for Ukrainians. In two months, about 300 people joined it, donating over $6,000. Volha used the money to buy the essential items for Ukrainians: baby food, medicines, hygiene products, and sleeping bags.
    • On May 8, when Europe marked victory over fascism, Ukrainian and Belarusian diasporas of Amsterdam, Brussels, London, Cologne, Szczecin, Krakow, Gdansk and Bialystok held rallies to protest against Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine.
    • Belarusians in Frankfurt joined a rally in support of Ukraine.

    Sabotage

    • The Hajun project, which monitors the movements of Russian troops in Belarus, released an operational summary for the day and reviewed propaganda in the regime's regional newspapers.

    Resistance

    • Minsk residents put up an anti-war poster in one of the city districts. 
    • Belarusians wrote an anti-war slogan on a Victory Day stand in Minsk. 

    Awareness campaign

    • US Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski gave an interview to Belsat, in which he talked about the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons, the need to investigate war crimes, as well as about Putin and Lukashenka, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, Julie Fischer, and others.
    • The Chestnaja Gazeta underground press outlet released a new issue, explaining the US’ lend-lease for Ukraine, covering the deteriorating situation at state enterprises, telling the number of dead Russian soldiers in Ukraine, and much more. 
    • The Protestnaya Belarus leaflet tells about the conviction of Russian citizen Sofia Sapega, death of Stanislau Shushkevich, missile launches from Belarus, and other issues.
