  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya congratulates Ukrainians on Independence Day

    August 24, 2022

    “Dear President Zelenskyy,
    Dear Ukrainians,

On behalf of the people of Belarus and the United Transitional Cabinet, I congratulate you on the Independence Day of Ukraine! This day resonates in the hearts and souls of every Belarusian who wants freedom. Today you are selflessly defending both your freedom and the independence of Europe. The free will of our country, Belarus, has been hijacked, and Russian aggressors are underhandedly attacking peaceful Ukrainian towns and villages from Belarusian land. But the Belarusian people, who in 2020 chose freedom, will not be oppressed forever. Belarusian soldiers in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and our brave partisans who stopped Russian trains moving towards Ukraine prove that.

Today's holiday marks six months since Russia started its aggression against Ukraine. The Kremlin-declared anti-Ukrainian ambitions, the ruthlessness, disrespect for human life and for everything Ukrainian, has made it a struggle for justice, dignity and home for Ukrainians.

The threat to the independence of Belarus and Ukraine is indeed serious. As the illegal regime traded Belarusian sovereignty for the sake of maintaining power, it dishonorably dragged our country into the war, breaking promises to the Ukrainian people and betraying Belarusian statehood. We already know that for the aggressor Putin, Belarus and Ukraine should not exist as states at all. And this unites us in our fight. After all, without a free Ukraine, there will be no free Belarus, but without a Belarus free from tyranny, there cannot be lasting security for Ukraine and for all of Europe. We must get through this dangerous time together, stop the dictators and establish new relations between our states, based on universal human values, a European perspective and the interests of mutual and regional security.

On this path, democratic Belarus stands by Ukraine, while its people help Ukrainians defend their freedom every day. We believe in Ukraine's victory and will not stop supporting the Ukrainian people in building the future they choose for themselves. And I am convinced that Belarusians and Ukrainians will be the best neighbors in free Europe.

Glory to Ukraine! Long Live Belarus!”
