  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed the OSCE ambassadors and called for invoking the Moscow Mechanism for Belarus

    February 23, 2023

    38 ambassadors from OSCE countries participated in the hearings organized by the delegations of Sweden, the United States, Lithuania, and the European Union. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya delivered a speech calling on the OSCE to reinvoke the Moscow Mechanism for Belarus regarding the humanitarian catastrophe, mass human rights violations, and the regime's complicity in war. The Moscow Mechanism will help advance the prosecution of those responsible for these crimes.

    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya also called on the countries that supported the Vienna Mechanism last year to be part of an international coalition to support independent Belarus. This coalition could focus on the following activities:

    1) assistance to the democratic movement;
    2) pressure on the regime;
    3) prosecution of those responsible for the crimes;
    4) delegitimization of the regime;
    5) preparation for a new Belarus.

    Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's speech was followed by addresses from ambassadors from the United States, Great Britain, France, Lithuania, and Montenegro. The Moscow Mechanism is expected to be invoked in a month. Consultations on forming the coalition will take place in the coming weeks.
