  • Support for political prisoners and renaming Belarus: Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya began her visit to Finland

    December 13, 2022

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with Prime Minister Sanna Marin, with whom she discussed:

    • The situation concerning political prisoners, conditions in prisons and international mechanisms for their release. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya appealed for assistance to the repressed – many are being released and need rehabilitation.
    • Changing the name of Belarus in Finnish. Now, Belarus is called “White Russia” (if translated). Renaming would be the right signal to the Belarusian people.
    • The regime’s involvement in the war. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya noted the regime bears full responsibility for dragging the whole country into war. She called on Finland to support Belarusian sovereignty and demand the withdrawal of Russian troops not only from Ukraine, but also from Belarus.
    • Assistance to the Belarusian civil society and Belarusians looking for a safe haven in the countries of the European Union. After Ms. Tsikhanouskaya's previous visit, Finland provided assistance to Belarusian human rights defenders and students.

Following the meeting with Finland’s PM, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. About 100 experts (offline and online) took part in the discussion.

The National Leader of Belarus also held a briefing for the ambassadors and representatives of 17 countries in Finland.
