  • Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Lukashenka and Putin made Belarus a target for attack”

    March 26, 2023

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya: “Lukashenka violated the Constitution when he effectively destroyed the separation of powers in the 1990s and made himself the sole ruler. He violated the Constitution when he declared war on civil society, purged the political parties, took away freedom of speech from television, and then destroyed independent media. He violated the Constitution when he rigged the elections and allowed Putin to wage a barbaric war against Ukraine from Belarusian territory.

He violated the Constitution every time he went against the will of the people and imprisoned people on political grounds. A year ago, he once again went against the fundamental demand of the people and violated the Constitution by depriving Belarus of its neutral and non-nuclear status. And now we see what it was for – to please Putin and his plans to deploy nuclear weapons.

Lukashenka has been dragging Belarus into war step by step even before this. Now, because of him, Belarus will not only be a strategic military location for Russia. Putin and Lukashenka also made Belarus a target for attack. This is a direct threat to the lives and security of more than 9 million people. Under the guise of peace and friendship, Lukashenka puts the entire people of Belarus in danger.

Propaganda can say anything to explain this. But the reality is simple: for 27 years, Belarus had no nuclear weapons in its territory, and now it will. Two dictators, carried away with war, are throwing us back three decades. Do we need another reason for a new regional security system?“
