  • «We call for a massive and powerful response to the crimes of Lukashenka – otherwise it will continue». Appeal by democratic forces to the international community

    June 01, 2021

The situation in Belarus is getting worse every day: the regime is increasingly harassing independent journalists and bloggers, more than 450 people have been recognized as political prisoners (and real political prisoners are many times more), and repressions are only growing. The power in Belarus has been seized by an illegitimate dictator who is not recognized in other countries, and Lukashenka himself has become a threat not only to Belarusians, but to the whole world. With the closed land border and the cancellation of flights, Belarusians become prisoners of the concentration camp that our country is becoming under the occupation regime of Lukashenka.

We call on the international community to hold Lukashenka accountable not only for the hijacking and kidnapping of Raman Pratasevich and Sofia Sapega, but for all of his crimes; to take comprehensive and effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such situations in the future.

The democratic forces welcome the readiness of US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the crisis in Belarus on 16 June, and insist that such negotiations be based on respect for the independence and sovereignty of Belarus.

We are confident that, with solidarity and effective measures on the part of the international community, Belarus will be able to find a solution to the deep political crisis in the country.
