  • Constitution Day, European Parliament Resolution, Estonian Special Envoy. Results of the work of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office for March 13-17

    Constitution Day. On Constitution Day, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya reminded Belarusians about the democratic forces' draft Constitution of the new Belarus and called on everyone to discuss it on the website: kanstytucyja.online. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya’s team also released a video explaining the required reforms of the Constitutional Court and other bodies needed to ensure that the country’s Constitution works.

    Responses to verdicts and detentions. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya commented on the verdicts against TUT.by representatives, as well as representatives of the expert community Tatsiana Kuzina and Valeryia Kastsiuhova. She also commented on the latest detentions of psychotherapists and crackdowns on people following “wrong” social media channels.

    Freedom Day / International Day of Solidarity. A website was launched for Freedom Day and the International Day of Solidarity with Belarus on March 25, covering opportunities to celebrate this day inside Belarus and around the world.

    Resolution on Belarus. On March 15, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on Belarus in view of the ongoing repression against the Belarusian people. This is the outcome of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's visit to Brussels. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya's advisor, Kristina Rikhter, commented on what the resolution means and what the EU member states can do.

    Coordination Council. Andrei Yahorau was elected as the Speaker and Alena Zhyvahlod as the Vice-Speaker of the Coordination Council. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya congratulated the new leadership on their election and expressed readiness for productive cooperation.

    Belarus-Finland. On March 15, a webinar was held involving Finnish and Belarusian NGOs under the patronage of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and the Secretary of State of Finland Johanna Sumuvuori. They discussed ideas and projects that Belarusian and Finnish organizations could implement together.

    Special Representative of Estonia for the Democratic Forces of Belarus. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya visited the Estonian embassy, where she officially welcomed Marko Koplimaa, who started his work last week. He was appointed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia to represent the country in relations with the democratic forces of Belarus. Vitali Malchanau, appointed by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, already works in Tallinn as her authorized representative.

    Women and the protest movement. On March 16, the Research Center of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office and the Oxford Belarus Observatory held a webinar on Belarus’ anti-authoritarian movement and women’s rights: female activism in times of terror and war. Experts included Elena Gapova, Anastasia Kostyugova, Alena Aharelyshava, and Veranika Laputska.

    Belarus' Euro-Atlantic Choice. The Lithuanian Seimas hosted a discussion by the European Dialogue center on Belarus' geopolitical choice. The discussion was held under the patronage of the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Participants included representatives of Belarusian political parties, civil society organizations, the United Transitional Cabinet, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office, Members of the European Parliament, Vice-Speakers of the Polish Senate and the Moldovan Parliament, the Co-Chair of the Group for Democratic Belarus in the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada, and others.

    Meetings with Belarusians. On March 13, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya and her advisor on legal issues Kristina Rikhter held their regular online meeting with Belarusians. Anyone can sign up for a meeting. 

    Media. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was interviewed by BBC World News (International), Iran-TV (International), DW (International), DW Conflict Zone (International), Deutschlandfunk (Germany), and Belsat (1, 2).
