  • Results of the work of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s Office for the week of July 12-18

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya started a working visit to the United States. Ambassador Julie Fisher greeted her at the airport upon her arrival. Ms. Tsikhanouskaya will hold meetings in the State Department and the White House. Also, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will meet with Democratic and Republican United States House of Representatives senators, USAID leader Samantha Power, and give interviews to various media. 

    – Last week, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya had completed a visit to Ireland. There she discussed emergency assistance to journalists and activists, the issue of Belarus at the UN Security Council, and met with Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary. He presented the Belarusian leader a report on the results of the internal investigation and agreed to consider Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya's proposal for Ryanair to come to Belarus after the victory of democracy. 

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya supported volunteers “A Country to Live In’, activists, human rights defenders, and representatives of civil society who faced attacks and detentions by the regime: “Human rights defenders in Belarus have been doing the government's work for years.”.

    – The volunteers of the Office launched a letter of support to the Belarusians. These are anonymous letters with support, which they distribute to mailboxes. Anyone can distribute such a letter and inspire other people. 

    – “Spotlight of the Regions” received information about the situation in the Belarusian town Narovlia: employees are paid 60 rubles, their management hides from people.

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya supported 12 Belarusians convicted under “the case of students”. Their last words in court are distributed in leaflets by the Office’s volunteers. 

    – On 16 August, the Day of Solidarity with Belarusian Women was held. Letters from women political prisoners were read out in Vilnius. Other actions and results of this day are here

    – Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya made calls with Belarusian doctors and representatives of the “Workers movement”. Medical specialists spoke about the problems with the availability of medicines, very poor material base in hospitals and polyclinics of the regions, worsening situation due to a new strain of covid, and catastrophic outflow of specialists. Representatives of the “Workers movement” told about the situation at the enterprises Hrodna Azot, Naftan, Gomselmash: pressure on activists and arrests of them, as well as the regime’ sattempts to bypass sanctions.

    – After being informed that the European Commission was planning to suspend the issuance of visas to Belarusians, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya made a statement, and her team contacted the European Commission, and the information about the suspension was not confirmed. The European Commission has affirmed that sanctions should only apply to the regime, not to Belarusians.
