  • Results of the Belarusian Anti-War Movement for May 5

    Any Belarusian can join the Movement and choose from numerous options to resist the war and Belarus' regime.  

    Here is an overview of the Movement on May 5. 

    Support for Ukrainians and Belarusians   

    • Belarusians of Georgia collected humanitarian aid for Ukrainians.
    • Special envoys to Belarus and ambassadors of the US, Lithuania and France honored the memory of Stanislau Shushkevich at the Belarusian House in Vilnius. Mr. Shushkevich was the first leader of independent Belarus. He passed away on May 4.
    • On May 8, the Free Orchestra in Warsaw will hold a major anti-war concert. The event is supported by the Belarus with Ukraine information campaign, National Anti-Crisis Management, Belarusian Youth Hub, and Heartbreaking Performance Art Group.
    • 149 Western companies have suspended their activities in Belarus over the regime's complicity in aggression. The National Anti-Crisis Management team, within its campaign to cut the regime’s financing, addressed companies that had suspended operations in Russia but continued to work in Belarus. NAM made an appeal template and urged Belarusians to fill it out and send it to companies, demanding that they suspend their cooperation with the Lukashenka regime, which had usurped power in Belarus.
    • The Gramotej Center for Inclusive Education and Transfer Go help refugee children fleeing the war in Ukraine and provide a set of classes in speech therapy, logo rhythmics, sensory therapy, ABA therapy, sand therapy and psychological assistance. Read more here.
    • The Belarusian Council for Culture, Free Belarus Center and Action Office launched an accelerator for cultural projects reinventing the modern challenges. 

    Resistance

    • Belarusians in Minsk honored the memory of Stanislau Shushkevich.
    • Minsk residents held an anti-war picket and distributed leaflets.
    • “Stop Lukashism”, said Belarusians of Barauliany, protesting against Lukashenka’s “peacemaking” statements.

    Sabotage

    • The Hajun project, which monitors the movements of Russian troops in Belarus, compiled a report for May 5
    • Hajun reviewed the key narratives of the state propaganda about the war in Ukraine for the day: Lukashenka called the Russian troops' war crimes in Bucha a “show” “orchestrated” by the West. He also claimed that the US wants to seize the moment to weaken Russia, while Russia is “doomed to win”.

    Awareness campaign

    • Franak Viacorka, Advisor to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, spoke on the possibility of the democratic forces’ participation in the negotiations after the capitulation of Russia. He also explained whether the West can settle for Lukashenka to ensure the security of Ukraine and why it is important to show the evidence of Lukashenka's involvement in war crimes.
    • The Literary Belarus cultural and educational project released a new issue of its journal, featuring articles on renowned Belarusian writers, novels and other Belarusian literature. 
    • The Belarusian PEN Center made a chronicle of human rights violations in the cultural sphere in Belarus in the first quarter of 2022, reporting 311 rights violations.
    • Freezing foreign exchange reserves and ensuring accountability for Lukashenka: Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya spoke on the outcomes and significance of her visit to the US and explained that by addressing the international community, the Office prevents Lukashenka from playing the false "peacemaker" role.
    • The Honest People initiative released a new leaflet, appealing to officials and urging them to quit the system to avoid involvement in the regime’s efforts to facilitate Russian aggression.
